RLC March Meeting Recap

RLC March Meeting Recap

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Northeast Florida had a crowd of well over one hundred people for its first meeting at the Four Points by Sheraton.

Cal Heseman opened with the Patriot’s Pledge, then RLCNEF Chairman John Stevens recognized the guests and gave an overview of the RLCNEF, its mission, values and goals.

In light of the cancellation of Marco Rubio’s appearance, his campaign offered Representative Aaron Bean to be the surrogate speaker on behalf of Rubio. Bean gave a compelling overview of the US Senate race, state and national politics.

Following Bean’s remarks, RLCFL Chairman Will Pitts, was interviewed by Radio Host Doug Kosarek. The interview contained questions pertaining to how an RLC endorsed candidate for the US Senate race might stand on specific policy issues. Chairman Pitts’ remarks were educational, stimulating and enlightening.

At the conclusion of this interview, the audience members were able to ask questions of Chairman Pitts and Representative Bean.

After the forum, three new events coming up for the RLC were introduced. Savannah Poole gave the details for the Members Only Cocktail Party on March 19th. Mike Durden and Cliff Johnson explained the importance of the upcoming RLCFL Lobby Days in Tallahassee on March 22nd and 23rd. Kristi Dunn gave an overview of the Leadership Institute classes for Liberty Activists that will take place at the Four Points by Sheraton on May 1st and 2nd.  Information on all three events can be found on the RLCNEF website.

Charlie Shephard spoke about his company Community Advisors, LLC, the sponsor for this month’s meeting.

Chairman Stevens wrapped up by announcing the next regular meeting on April 6th.  At the meeting, there will be a vote on the RLCNEF bylaw revisions, as well as elections to fill the positions of Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer (and any other vacancies on the Board).

Some comments regarding the meeting:

“The meeting was great. I would have loved to hear more from Mr Pitts. He was very informative. I loved the format. At the same time, I liked that John interrupted in the interest of time. It showed that the RLC recognizes that our time is valuable. Over all, I give the meeting 2 thumbs up!” –Lesa Melaugh

“Outstanding format. Will Pitts is such a great communicator.” – Mike Austell

“Thought it was great.  Beautiful place, and I think it is a dynamite place to have your monthly meetings.  Thought, in spite of Rubio canceling, you got a pretty darned decent turn out.  I had a great time and really enjoyed doing the food table thing!  Many very, very nice people, and everyone seemed to enjoy the event.” – Pat McBride

For more information on any of these events please see the RLCNEF Calendar at www.rlcnf.org

Rubio Cancels Appearance; RLC State Chairman to Address Senate Race

On Wednesday evening, February 24th the RLCNEF received a call from the Rubio for Senate Campaign informing them that the candidate would not be able to speak at the Tuesday, March 2nd  RLCNEF Meeting due to a scheduling conflict. The Rubio campaign has offered to send a surrogate to address the RLCNEF in Marco’s absence.

Since the RLCNEF had requested that Rubio address specific questions concerning issues of liberty,  it was decided to have RLC State Chairman Will Pitts address the same issues of liberty from the perspective of the Republican Liberty Caucus. Doug Kosarek, Daytona Beach radio talk show host of “Wake Up with Doug K” has agreed to interview Chairman Pitts on these issues. There will also be time for those in attendance to ask questions.

The March meeting will be the first in the new Four Points Sheraton location. There will be a reception from 6:00PM – 7:00PM with complimentary drinks and appetizers donated by the RLCNEF membership followed by the meeting from 7:00PM – 8:15PM.

The RLCNEF welcomes anyone interested in the liberty message to attend our meetings – regardless of membership status or party affiliation.

RLCNEF January Meeting Recap

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Northeast Florida opened the new year with a timely discussion, hosting state Senator Carey Baker in a discussion titled “Guns, Health Care and State Sovereignty.”  The senator addressed a packed house of dozens of RLC members and guests.

RLCNEF Chairman John Stevens opened the meeting by introducing the Patriot’s Pledge and the mission of the RLCNEF.  Victor Wilhelm, RLCNEF’s Activism Committee chairman, introduced Senator Baker with a short biography and a description of the Commissioner of Agriculture, the seat Baker is running for in this year’s election season.

Senator Baker’s presentation focused on issues of state sovereignty and the Tenth Amendment, including defending Florida from federal laws limiting freedoms with regards to firearms and health care.  He discussed three important pieces of legislation.

The first piece of legislation was HM19/SM96, a house bill introduced to defend Florida’s sovereignty as a state.  It is described as “A memorial to the Congress of the United States, urging Congress to honor the provisions of the Constitution of the United States and United States Supreme Court case law which limit the scope and exercise of federal power. “

The second was HB21/SB98, the Florida Firearms Freedom Act, which protects the Second Amendment rights of Floridians and Florida-based firearms manufacturers. “Firearms, firearm accessories, and ammunition for personal use manufactured in state are not subject to federal law or regulation including registration.”

The final piece was HJR37/SJR72, the Florida Health Care Freedom Act.  This bill restricts the government from interference in health care in the state of Florida, such as prohibiting the government from forcing people to buy health insurance.  It states that any “law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system.”

Senator Baker answered questions on these topics and his campaign for Commissioner of Agriculture.

After Baker’s presentation, the RLCNEF presented other new business, such as a new meeting location at the Four Points Sheraton on Baymeadows Road (to be used starting in March), the Republican Party of Florida’s annual meeting on January 8th and 9th, a new RLCNEF Secretary (Erik Setzer), two Rules Committee meetings coming up in January, and ways to help the RLCNEF.

The next Republican Liberty Caucus of Northeast Florida meeting will be Tuesday, February 2nd, at the offices of W.G. Pitts.  The topic is “Living the Liberty Message.”  You can find out more information at:
